Machinal - Lighting Design

The first bold choice on Machinal was to convert the Henry Heymann from a three-quarter thrust to an arena with the addition of an extra seating bank. My design research included confinement, insanity, and prying sensational journalism. From these ideas I identified a need for angled frontlight, toplight, and ghostly green patterns. Scrollers, I decided, would be too distracting to use in such a show. I used two sets of acting areas. The first was for frontlight, after defining the areas I drew sightlines to the center of each and determined the needed angle for each instruments. My magic sheet was also based on these bold angles.
